How Much Wedding Cake Do I Need?

How Much Wedding Cake Do I Need? A Complete Guide to Wedding Cake Servings & Sizes

Planning your wedding cake can feel surprisingly complicated. How many tiers do you need? How many servings should you order? Do you need enough cake for every guest? And what if you want a beautiful statement cake without ordering a huge amount of cake?

If you’re planning a wedding in Vancouver, one of the first questions you’ll likely ask your cake designer is: “How much wedding cake do I need?”

The answer depends on more than just your guest count. Your cake design, number of tiers, whether you're serving other desserts, how the cake will be cut, and even whether you want to save the top tier can all affect the ideal size.

At Joconde Cakes, we help couples find the balance between having a beautiful Vancouver wedding cake that fits their vision and ordering the right amount of cake for their celebration.

Here’s everything you need to know about wedding cake sizes, servings, and tiers.

How Much Wedding Cake Do I Need for My Wedding?

As a starting point, you can plan for approximately one wedding cake serving per guest if the wedding cake is your primary dessert.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean your cake needs to be enormous.

Wedding cake servings are typically smaller than the generous slices you might serve at home. A standard wedding portion is often around 1 × 2 inches, which allows a tiered cake to serve considerably more guests than you might expect.

It’s also important to remember that wedding cake tiers are typically much taller than a standard home-baked cake. At Joconde Cakes, our tiers are 5 inches or more in height, so even when a cake is cut into a smaller 1 × 2-inch wedding portion, the slice is still a substantial and satisfying piece of cake thanks to its height.

For example, standard round wedding cake servings are approximately:

Cake Tier Approx. Servings
6-inch round 12
8-inch round 24
10-inch round 38
12-inch round 56
14-inch round 78

These numbers are a useful planning guide, but serving counts can vary between bakeries depending on the height of the cake and how it is cut.

That's why it's always best to ask your wedding cake designer how many servings their specific cake sizes provide.

How Many Tiers Does My Wedding Cake Need?

Your guest count is one of the biggest factors when determining how many tiers you need.

For example, a classic combination of 6-inch, 8-inch and 10-inch round tiers provides approximately 74 servings. A four-tier cake using 6-, 8-, 10- and 12-inch tiers provides approximately 130 servings.

That doesn't mean every wedding with 75 guests needs a three-tier cake, though.

Your cake designer can create different combinations depending on the look you're trying to achieve.

Your wedding cake doesn't have to be sized only for servings

Sometimes couples want a three-tier wedding cake for 50 guests, even though a smaller cake could technically provide enough servings.

Why?

Because the proportions and height of the cake are an important part of the overall design.

Faux cake tiers can also be used to create additional height, size, and visual impact without adding additional servings. For example, a cake might have two real tiers containing cake and one or more faux tiers that are beautifully decorated to create the desired proportions. This can be a great option when you want a larger, more dramatic statement cake without needing to purchase enough real cake to fill every tier.

Your cake designer can help you determine the right combination of real and faux tiers based on your guest count, design, and budget.

The goal isn't always to have every tier serve cake—it’s to create a cake that looks beautiful, feels proportionate to your venue, and provides the right amount of cake for your guests.

Do I Need a Slice of Cake for Every Wedding Guest?

Not necessarily—but there are a few things to consider.

If the wedding cake is the only dessert, we generally recommend making sure there are enough servings for your guest count.

If you're serving a full dessert table, however, you may not need to order a large decorated cake designed to provide a serving for every single guest.

Some couples choose to have a smaller statement wedding cake accompanied by additional cake or desserts served from the kitchen.

This can be a particularly useful option if you want an elaborate, highly decorated wedding cake but don't want to pay for several additional tiers of intricate decoration simply to increase the serving count.

What Is a Kitchen Cake?

A kitchen cake (sometimes called a sheet cake or cutting cake) is an undecorated or simply decorated cake kept in the kitchen and cut into servings for guests.

This can be a great solution when you want your wedding cake to look a certain way without making the entire cake large enough to serve everyone.

For example, imagine you're having a wedding with 120 guests but your dream design looks best as a three-tier cake.

Instead of creating a much larger decorated cake solely for additional servings, you could have:

Your statement wedding cake + additional kitchen cake

Your guests still receive delicious cake, while the cake on display remains proportional to your design.

A Simple Rule of Thumb

When servings are the only deciding factor, a good general rule of thumb is to plan for approximately 70–80% of your total guest count in wedding cake servings. For example, if you have 100 guests, you might plan for approximately 70–80 cake servings.

This is also why many of the wedding cakes featured in our gallery are large, three-tier cakes designed to serve approximately 75–80 guests. This is one of the most common wedding cake sizes we create, and it offers a beautiful, substantial cake presence while providing an appropriate number of servings for many weddings.

However, servings are only one part of the equation. Your cake design, the size and style of your wedding, the scale of your venue or ballroom, your cake table and overall décor, and your budget all play an important role in determining the right size and number of tiers for your wedding cake.

The goal is to find the right balance between having enough cake for your guests and creating a cake that feels proportionate, beautiful, and appropriate for your celebration.
